Marriage was once a sacred institution that bonded a man and woman together for life. I find it strange that while Baby Boomers are celebrating 50th and 60th anniversaries, our generation is celebrating 2nd and 3rd divorces. Is it that we don’t take marriage as seriously as our ancestors did? One factor may be that we are bombarded with stories of divorce on a daily basis, therefore divorce seems to be normal, like a visit to the supermarket. Divorces are difficult enough in real life, but the media tends to thrive off of marriages crumbling before our eyes. Nowadays people place bets on marriages as if they were at the Kentucky Derby. For example, my favorite Kardashian sister Khloe reportedly gave her sister’s marriage 6 months before it would be over. Well Khloe, you lost that bet by a landslide( -_-) Now, I definitely agree that some people do not take marriage seriously even before they enter into a supposedly life-long commitment, but the media also plays a role in making divorce more popular. It seems as though cameras are always lurking in the shadows for an opportunity to catch a married person without their wedding ring or in the arms of someone other than their spouse.
Let’s look at Katy Perry and Russell Brand’s firework marriage. Their marriage appeared to be big, bold (especially since they were from two different worlds and her parents were not too pleased), and beautiful, their love was one for spectators to admire….kinda like a fireworks show. But we all know that after the 4th of July the sparks are no longer flying through the sky. Christmas appeared to be on July 5th as the media reported that Katy and Russell spent the holidays miles apart with no wedding rings. Shortly after, the divorce was all over the internet, tv, radio, and magazines. Happy New year to the Brands, and the media. The media tends to glamorize divorce by airing out who is getting what and who bounced back with the hottest rebound. *Side Note: J. Lo, sit down and stop letting that little boy play with your kids and drive your car.* While we’re speaking of glamour divorces, let’s not forget Basketball (Ex) Wives (and baby mama’s) Jennifer Williams’ divorce/independence party in Miami. I won’t even elaborate on Kim K’s 2nd 5 minute marriage. I’ll just say that she should have left homely Kris in Minnesota to live his plain life.
Anywho, I wonder why people stand before a pastor, family, and GOD and blatantly lie. Now don’t get me wrong, I do believe that there are times when divorce is the best option. If your spouse is consistently unfaithful, abusive, a pedophile, an addict, etc. it’s best to move on for your health and safety. But I refuse to believe that after 72 days or maybe even a year, you’ve tried EVERYTHING to make your marriage work and keep your vows to your spouse and more importantly God. Maybe I’m looking too deep into the words said during the wedding ceremony. Or maybe the traditional vows should be changed to imply that couples will stay together for as long as they both are happy. We have to be careful not to allow the media to lead us to believe that the “Fairytale Wedding” is more important than the “Ever After.” Carrie Bradshaw can tell you that the huge wedding isn’t what joined her and Big. It was the small ceremony in the courthouse and the vows that they decided to keep (even though she kissed Aiden lol). After all, what really matters is that spouses promise to love each other “til death do us part.”

So true, and very well written!
ReplyDeleteInteresting point of view. Here's the way I see it. Marriage was instituted by God hence a Christian/Judaical institution. Many celebs do not even acknowledge God nowadays. I believe it is impossible to have a successful marriage without acknowledging the one who instituted it and inviting Him to be a part of the marriage.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, the divorce rate in America is where it is because God has been pushed aside in marriages and people think they can work out their marriages with human wisdom. No wonder one of the common reasons for divorce is irreconcilable differences. Because, the common ground, God, the chord that holds the marriage together is taken out.
